NASA has selected Sérgio Godinho, a researcher at the CHANGE Associated Laboratory and MED/University of Évora, to join the team of consultants for the EDGE - Earth Dynamics Geodetic Explorer space mission. This invitation recognizes Sérgio Godinho's vast experience in missions such as ICESat-2 and GEDI, pioneers in the analysis of the three-dimensional structure of ecosystems, biomass estimation and carbon stocks, as well as his position as a leading expert in LiDAR technology.
The EDGE mission, a finalist for launch in 2030 or 2032, promises to revolutionize Earth observation with state-of-the-art LiDAR technology, enabling detailed mapping of terrestrial ecosystems and crucial applications such as simulating the spread of forest fires, monitoring biodiversity and habitat conservation, quantifying forest carbon reserves and mitigating climate change.
Sérgio Godinho's participation reinforces the role of Portuguese science at the forefront of space research and environmental monitoring, highlighting the excellence of the CHANGE Institute, along with MED and the University of Évora, on the international scene.
